If you’re thinking of starting your own veggie plot a wood garden bed is an excellent idea. The humble wood garden bed will make gardening so much easier and productive. Garden beds have the benefit of being raised, so there’s not nearly as much back braking work involved with garden maintained, a reduction is pest and weed problems is also a great benefit as the high walls act as a barrier to many invasive weeds and pests. Copper adhesive tape can also be stuck around the perimeter of the garden bed to act as an environmentally friendly sail barrier, keeping the snails and slugs out and your veggies in.
If you have poor soil quality like so many Australians do a wood garden bed will solve that problem as you can fill it with the best soil for the job. Most garden supplies provide some sort of super soil mix that combines manure, mushroom compost, top soil and organic wood dust.
Make sure the soil provided is pH balanced as mushroom compost of often very basic and needs to be balanced. things like coffee grounds and tea leaves will help to balance a basic ph. phosphoric, nitric and sulphuric acid are often used in very dilute concentrations to balance the ph but for safety reasons these should only be used by qualified horticulturists.

Wicking beds
We now stock wicking bed boxes, these are a great alternative to high drainage sand. Garden beds require less fill and can hold more water, lasting longer between the hot weeks in the peak of summer.
